How to take a quiz

Checking the time limit and how many attempts you get, then taking it — and why you cannot see the answers.

What you will learn

  • How to check the rules before you start
  • How to take a quiz
  • Why the correct answers are not shown

Before you begin

  • Check how long you get and how many attempts are allowed. With one attempt, there is no second go.

Check the rules first

Quizzes are question sets marked by the system. The list tells you the rules before you commit to anything.

Read this row before you open anything. Duration and attempts are the two that matter.
State
Published means you can take it.
Duration
How long you get once you start.
Attempts
How many goes you are allowed. Often one — in which case there is no practice run.
Pass mark
The score you need.

Taking it

An open quiz. Three tabs: the questions, your past attempts, and Take it.
  1. Step 1. Click Quizzes, then the quiz title.

  2. Step 2. Read the summary line: questions, points, pass mark, attempts and time.

  3. Step 3. Look at the Questions tab to see what kind of questions they are.

  4. Step 4. When you are ready, open Take it.

The clock starts when you begin. Do not open it to 'have a look' if you only get one attempt.

  5. Step 5. Check Attempts afterwards for your score.

The correct answers are not shown to you

You can read the questions, but the system deliberately does not send the answer key to your account — before, during or after. That is not a fault, and it is the same for every student.

One attempt means one

If the Attempts column says 1, starting the quiz uses it up. Make sure you have the time and quiet to finish before you open Take it.

What you should see

Your attempt is recorded, with a score.

Helpful tips

  • Check the duration against the number of questions. Forty minutes for fifteen questions is comfortable; ten minutes is not.

If something goes wrong

There is no Take it tab.
The quiz may not be published yet, or you may have used all your attempts. Check the Attempts tab.
You ran out of time.
Message your tutor. Whether you get another attempt is their decision, not something the system can give you.
